Marie Reddy is retiring from LLRC after 33 years!

After 33 years working in the library at Palm Beach State Marie is retiring! Marie began her career in the Personnel Department.   She moved to Secretary to the Director of the library, and for a short period of time Marie was Supervisor of Circulation. These last several years she's been working in the Periodicals and Technical Services departments.

This past year she has been working diligently assisting Pat Alvarez in Periodicals sorting and publishing our college archives.  This is a vast collection with over 75 years of pictures, articles and mementos through all the changes from Palm Beach Junior College, Palm Beach Community College and now Palm Beach State.

A quote from Tabatha McDonald, President of AFC
"Marie is a valued and hard-working member of the AFC chapter.  She has contributed so much through the years, always going above and beyond the call of duty. Among her most notable work is her tireless efforts to make our Annual Book Sale a success.  This year we grossed almost $4,500, the largest amount ever, and collected more books than ever before. She also worked diligently for several years to coordinate our 'Paint Your Heart Out' community service project."

Marie's sons, Billy and Brian
Marie told us the Key West FACC trip was her favorite but the 'best' trip was the ALA meeting in Washington D.C. for the library.  She has worked the book sale for the last 10 years, she was the FACC Chapter Secretary and on the board for the Career and Professional Commission.

We asked Marie what she was looking forward to in retirement.  She would like to travel, having lunch with her friends that still work and it sounds like she might be coming back to help with the Annual Book Sale next April.

What will you do on your first day off?
"I’m going to sleep late and then go out to lunch with whoever I can get to go with me!"

Marie, we will miss your sense of humor and big smile!
Retirement will certainly become one 'big' fun adventure for you!!!

Lyn is retiring from LLRC!

Farewell to Lyn Galotti

Lyn has been Brian Kelley's administrative assistant for the past five years. She worked with Mr. Kelley on the Holocaust Remembrance, Civility, Diversity and Art Events.

Lyn worked on several of the 'Read Together Palm Beach County' programs, 'One Book-One College' programs, numerous exhibits, events, receptions and meetings in our Gallery.
She also assisted the Director with the purchase of the new furniture for the library.

Staff Meeting and Farewell for Lyn

While working at Palm Beach State College, Lyn's son graduated from our Dental program.  She proudly presented his diploma to him at graduation.

We asked Lyn what she is looking forward to in retirement.

"Spending more time with my new granddaughter, doing some traveling, as well as decorating my new home."

"Best of all; not turning on and off my alarm clock!"

Estaline Rogers, Brian Kelley, Lyn Galotti

We will miss you!

Have fun on your next adventure in life!

Ray Bradbury Passes Away June 6th, 2012

In 2002, Ray Bradbury's book Fahrenheit 451 was chosen for the 1st Read Together Palm Beach County program called "One Book, One Community",  held in March and April, 2002.

Formerly called Palm Beach Community College in 2002, we joined in the selection process along with the county libraries. We also held several group 'talk' sessions  in our library which involved many of our students, faculty, and staff.

Quote from The Palm Beach Post:
‘He wrote "Fahrenheit 451" at the UCLA library, on typewriters that rented for 10 cents a half hour. He said he carried a sack full of dimes to the library and completed the book in nine days, at a cost of $9.80.'

The purpose of Read Together Palm Beach County is to involve 10,000 - 20,000 adults in our county to read the same book at the same time. The reading campaign helps adults who can read, but might not pick up a book as often, to get involved in the habit of reading again. It also encourages community dialogue and engagement as library friends, neighbors, students, faculty and staff, discuss key themes in the chosen book.
