Passing of Professor Richard Marshall

 Monday, August 19,
Professor Richard Marshall passed away.

Professor Marshall was admired and loved for his straight shooting philosophy that inspired students to try harder and encouraged them to scramble up the academic ladder.  He loved to mix his work with real life stories to keep students engaged.

Many days as he passed by our Circulation Desk, he would stop to relate a new story about teaching. Hardly a visit went by that a student would stop, look right at Richard with great admiration and shake hands. The student would tell him a story about how much he/she enjoyed one of Richard’s life lessons.

The book Who Moved My Cheese was one of his class favorites. He made sure we always had an ample supply of books for students.  The library hosted his classes in our Gallery with books and real pieces of cheese for snacks. This was definitely a big hit with the students.

In 2006, Richard also included in his lessons for students the Read Together Palm Beach County Program featuring To Kill a Mockingbird. Students gathered in our Gallery to discuss key themes.

The tables were decorated with shoes from all walks of life to illustrate when Atticus tells the children several times that they need to walk in someone else’s shoes before judging.

Constitution Week!

Richard always enjoyed 'Unscrambling the Preamble' with students!

It was always a pleasure to see Richard for the scheduled Instructional Lab with one of our Reference Librarians for each of his Strategies classes that included a tour of each department. He worked closely with our library staff to promote learning and skill building for his students especially in the area of research. Richard was always the first one to say YES to a library event!
All of us here at the library will miss Richard very much; his professionalism, his passion for teaching, his big sincere smile and especially his hearty laugh.
Goodbye Professor Marshall.  We miss you!

Part IV-From the Chair’s View! SEFLIN Regional Technology Conference

From the chair’s view, working with the SEFLIN Conference Planning Committee this year was a real joy!  With attendance last year nearing the top, we figured we had a potential problem. The facilities at Florida International University are a great venue, but we could exceed the limitations and turn people away.  We don’t want to do that.  However, after looking at other venues which would bring us to the next level, the costs jumped tremendously.

We thought about Palm Beach County.  Then we looked at the huge number of non-SEFLIN members in Miami who attended, but would not likely make the trip to Palm Beach County.  Would there be an equal or better number of non-members in Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, or Indian River Counties who would pick up the slack?  An informal survey of library directors told us this would not be a possibility.  So, we remained with the Kovens Center at FIU.

We were overjoyed at the response which capped off at 302 by the end of the registration period. The committee people were all great people to work with and made the chairperson’s job extremely easy!  It was great!  And very rewarding and fulfilling to hear the wonderful remarks!

I thought we should spend time celebrating our success!  We had never done that before, in all the years I served on the committee.  So we made arrangements to celebrate at a Duffy’s near the convention center.  We had a small group, but it was nice – to CELEBRATE a job well done!

The SEFLIN “Evolving Technologies” Annual Conference was held July 11, 2013, at the Kovens Conference Center, Biscayne Bay Campus, Florida International University, North Miami Beach, Florida, to the largest crowd in the history of the conferences.  Three-hundred and two registered guests attended the conference and were provided a healthy dose of new information and knowledge about technologies which impact our organizations and enhance our ability to provide educational and library services.

The 17-member Planning Committee was headed by Palm Beach State College / Lake Worth Campus Library Professor Douglas Cornwell.  Together with the SEFLIN staff, this team worked diligently over the past year in putting together a successful conference.

The keynote speaker, Jamie LaRue, library director of the Douglas County, Colorado Public Libraries, addressed issues regarding improved library systems for delivery of traditional library resources and digital technologies such as ebooks and databases.

Twenty-four speakers and panelists presented 12 breakout sessions about various library technologies.  Conference sponsor displays, a luncheon, and exciting door prizes were well received.

Part II SEFLIN Regional Technology Conference

The article below was submitted by Connie Tuisku; Librarian at Palm Beach State College.
Wish everyone could have attended the SEFLIN Regional Conference, Evolving Library Technologies because it had much to offer.  Jamie LaRue gave a provocative keynote with a vision for making the Douglas County Library an indispensable service-provider in the community.  Having used technology to automate the check-out function, creating higher paying/functioning positions, and saving the county money, he used his creative mantra , “now that you have more time, I’d like you to…” to  inspire and support library personnel to new levels of community service.
Everyone loves apps, and when they’re free, well, what could be better? In the first breakout session, Is There an App for That?  Assessing the Next Generation of Information Literacy,  Dr. Jonathan Roach, St. Thomas University, in addition to giving us a history of information literacy in less than 30 minutes (can’t wait for his PowerPoint) gave his audience a basketful of apps—great for student learning and library geeks.  Here’s a sample:

·         Rubric Tools:  Google public template gallery

·         Environmental Meter App:  Decibel 10th

·         Graphic Organizers:  Popplet; Tools 4 Students;

·         Observation:  Evernote

·         Learning & Assessment:  Infuse Learning; Go Class; Edmodo
Another session that was packed with great information was Open Access: What? Why? How? by Stephanie Brenenson.  Stephanie provided an overview of the traditional academic publishing model and developed a thesis on how and why the “disruptive innovation” of open access publishing challenges the traditional academic model to create new markets.

This conference will be hard to top!  Thanks to Doug Cornwell for a great job as Chair of the Conference Planning Committee and for the welcome address.

Thank you Connie for a terrific article!

Nora liked the Seflin Conference because it was very intellectual. It inspired her to use the T3: Teach, Tools and Transformation at work. Nora says, "It is a tool that opens the door to a deeper grasp of our mission."

Nita enjoyed Keynote speaker, Jamie LaRue, who addressed technology and change in 'T3: Tech, Tools, and Transformation'. She noted, 'Many of these useful technologies are already active at Palm Beach State College'.

Janet DeVries submitted this article below:

On Thursday, July 11, 2013, three Palm Beach State College librarians and three library paraprofessionals from the Lake Worth campus traveled to North Miami for the Annual SEFLIN Regional Conference. Evolving Library Technologies was the theme of the daylong conference held at the Kovens Conference Center on the campus of Florida International University.

Librarian/Associate Professor I Douglas Cornwell who served as the chairperson for the 2013 Technology Conference, opened the General Session with a zealous welcome and introduced Keynote Speaker Jamie LaRue. LaRue, former President of the Colorado Library Association and director of the Douglas County Libraries since 1990, spoke to the enthusiastic group of over 300 library professionals about current trends and the future of technology in libraries with his presentation T3: Tech, Tools and Transformation. LaRue encouraged librarians and staff to embrace new technologies and library automation. The use of technology allows future staff to work better and smarter, leaving more time for personalized assistance and enhancements to library service. LaRue spoke about cultivating local authors and facilitating libraries as e-publishers. In addition to bringing books and information to the community, a progressive library embracing new technology brings ‘local stories’ to the world.

Conference participants had time to network with attendees from other libraries, meet with sponsors, and select individualized workshops from a wide array of breakout sessions. I attended three wonderful 60 minute sessions. While all sessions were interesting and informative, two sessions had takeaway skills I could use immediately in my position as Library Technician II.  Is There an App for That? Assessing the Next Generation of Information Literacy, spoke of the many ways customer service is delivered to our patrons. After a brief history of libraries and information literacy, the speaker dazzled the crowd with a myriad of new apps to manage libraries. Some of the more memorable Apps were the library environment apps including Decibel Meter Pro and Sound Meter. Jonathan Roach’s session on Assessing Information Literacy, introduced the topics of Trans-literacy & Digital-literacy. He explained the way librarians and technicians keep up with information literacy and the changing way it is delivered is to “learn, unlearn & relearn!”

The SEFLIN Technology Conference energized, inspired and encouraged me to embrace new technologies and keep my eyes open for opportunities to deliver exceptional customer service in new and changing ways. [ Thank you Janet! ]
