LLRC Saying Goodbye to Diana Moore Reference Librarian January 2012

Diana has been instrumental from the beginning of our BAS program in 2009, helping with orientations, instructional classes and individual help for BAS students. Recently Diana has been working with the Circulation Department to revamp our iPads with a variety of educational apps. The new modifications will help promote using iPads for research and class assignments.

We will miss you Diana and hope you enjoy your next adventure with your family in the North East.

Diana Moore's Bio:

Diana is the Bachelor’s degree librarian at Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth, Florida, obtained her MSLIS from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. She is also the distance learning liaison to the library and an advocate for emerging technologies in libraries and higher education. She is currently working on her doctorate degree in computer and information science at Nova Southeastern University, specializing in computing technology in education. Her research interests include media tablets in education and mobile learning (m-learning). She has contributed to American Libraries, Computers in Libraries, and Portal. She maintains a blog focusing on technology and libraries and higher education. Her blog can be found at http://www.gurulibrarian.com/.

A farewell letter from Reference Librarian, Pat Alvarez, Christina's supervisor
Christina will be greatly missed. She worked like a beaver when she approached a new task. I remembered when she first started working, an older patron came to tell us that he could not believe how hard Christina worked just by observing her.

When she first came to us 5 years ago, she was just a kid out of high school. I saw a progression of maturity as the years went by. At that time, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to go back to school since she had to quit during her first semester for money reasons. It didn’t take but a little encouragement to get her to pursue her dreams of an education. Her love of learning was something to be admired. She didn’t just go to school for a diploma, she went to school mostly to learn something new. If she took a class that she felt she was not learning; she was not happy. It took her a few years to decide what she really wanted to study, since she seemed to like everything. She went from wanting to study history, to creative writing and finally she found her niche in Communications. She decided she wanted to be a Speech professor just like her mentor professor, Lori Crane. She even considered Librarianship as a “maybe” in her future.

She thrived when she had many things going on. I would be amazed and scared for her when I learned about her PTK projects, her honor’s projects, the many charities that she offered her time to, the writing for the school newspaper, her school projects, her family responsibilities and working full-time. But the times she didn’t have a crazy schedule, she had to look for something extra to do. I was always reprimanding her for overextending herself, thus not getting enough sleep. This caused her to be late for work…. But those days that she was late she usually made them up by staying after hours of her own accord.

I never saw Christina get mad at any of the people she helped. No matter how little sleep she got the night before, which was frequently, she still helped the students with a smile on her face. Even when students made her angry she kept helping them and afterwards would come to my office door where she then would vent to me about them… but never said anything to their face.

One thing that Christina definitely did not like is when people called her by a different name. Some would call her Christine or a variation of that name. She didn’t have a problem correcting them time and time again. She would come and tell me that she could not understand why people could not remember that her name was CHRISTINA. Then I started making the mistake of spelling her name in Spanish (Cristina) when I wrote her e-mails. She would not hesitate to correct me even after explaining that I was used to writing it that way.

She loved to learn new things. Her position was of a Library Assistant, but she when Pat Horlick left before Loretta was hired, a while passed and I didn’t have anyone else to help me with the Periodicals duties. So she assumed some of the responsibilities of Pat’s position because she was able to do them so well and willingly. There was not a thing that I asked her to do that she didn’t tackle without complaining. In fact, she would always ask me to teach her more. One of the reasons I took her under my wings was because I saw myself in her when I was her age.

I feel she brought to work her youthful dreams and optimism; a breath of fresh air that is wonderful to have around especially for those of us that are way passed that stage in our lives……We’ll miss you Christina and we are all rooting for you to achieve all your dreams.

PALM BEACH COUNTY 2012

PURPOSE: To involve 10,000 - 20,000 adults throughout Palm Beach County in reading the same book at the same time. This community reading campaign will entice adults who can read, but often don't, to get involved in the habit of reading again. It will also promote community dialogue and engagement as citizens gather together to discuss key themes.

HISTORY: Based on the success of similar campaigns in Seattle and Chicago, the Campaign Coordinating Committee has conducted Read Together Palm Beach County in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010. In each campaign, thousands of adults read and discussed with great enthusiasm the chosen community book: Fahrenheit 451, Their Eyes Were Watching God, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Memory Keeper's Daughter and The Book Thief.

RECOGNITION: Former Gov. Jeb Bush wrote to every city in Florida and encouraged them to form "One Book, One Community" reading campaigns based on the Palm Beach County model. Read Together Palm Beach County produced a handbook on how to conduct a similar reading campaign and Former Governor Bush urged municipalities to use this book to guide them in their campaigns.

Pat Alvarez, Reference Librarian, was nominated for the Bravo Award for her work on the Digital Archive Collection. She took on this huge project to transfer all the Lake Worth campus library 'paper archives' to a 'digital medium'.

This collection was in numerous boxes full of photographs, documents and other college memorabilia. Pat also coordinated the digitization project of print volumes through a grant from Lyrasis. These resources are now available on our Internet Archive, including our college catalogs and the Galleon [college yearbook].

Thank you to Suellen Mann, Executive Director of the College Foundation, for sponsoring the refreshments and partnering with the library to organize this event. Mr. Brian Kelley, Library Director of the LLRC, explained the reason for inviting everyone today and to talk about how the college alumni might be able to help the college. He also wanted to talk about some exciting new possibilities of what the college could do for them.

To help preserve our college history, Mr. Kelley showed the guests the boxes, arranged by decade, that contain photos of mostly unnamed individuals and events. He is asking for help to identify these pictures. He encouraged everyone to ‘spread’ the word to others. Mr. Kelley said “Eventually we hope to digitize the majority of the holdings of the archives of the college. There will be additional identification possibilities in the future as we make the unidentified photos available online”. He also reviewed the history of the school from the year 1933 that began with 41 students to the present with over 50,000 students. Our new BAS program began in 2009 with our first graduating class this past May 2011. Mr. Kelley introduced Suellen who told more about the Emeritus employee association benefits.

This unique and extraordinary film uncovers the gruesome torture and murder of Black Germans in the Third Reich through a profoundly distressing experience in Nazi Germany. Business Speaker's Series-Nov. 19th, Robert Moore

European Management Model

To continue the library's Business Speaker's Series for the BAS program, Robert Moore gave his presentation on European management style. With an IT background, Mr. Moore spent over 20 years in Europe, including Germany, Ireland and Poland. He explained why other countries are looking at this management style including United States and Japan. He started out with, "ask questions as we go", which put students at ease right away.

Mr. Moore explained why the European style has "no short term planning". They always use the long term approach, even though it makes for longer meetings. European businesses expect their companies to last at least 10 years, not the typical 3 years as in other countries. It seems to be one of the European's major keys to their success. European managers also value interpersonal skills and personal cultures. They are experienced in dealing with different cultures with so many countries clustered so close together for several hundred years, unlike the US.

European managers also consider CSR [Corporate Social Responsibility] so important for securing strategic competitive gain. Europeans allow their government to promote businesses, whereas US managers are not persuaded. European companies invest much more abroad than American companies.

According to Roland Berger's "Top 3000" Study 1998-2007, the US is no longer a role model. The graph in Mr. Berger's study showed us the percentage of companies consistently in the top 3000; Europe 1st, US 2nd and Japan 3rd. European IT providers also performed better because of the European management model; Europe 1st, Japan 2nd, US 3rd.

Refreshments were enjoyed during the presentation.

Goliath's Head Presentation at Palm Beach State Nov. 15th and 16th, 2010

Professor Sandra Didner, Mr. Brian Kelley, Mr. Alan Fleishman

Mr. Alan Fleishman, author of "Goliath's Head", gave 2 days of amazing presentations at Palm Beach State College Library, Lake Worth Campus. Professor Sandra Didner made desserts like those that may have been eaten in late 1880's and early 1900's.

Mr. Fleishman is a "grand" storyteller. He captivated his audience from the beginning of the presentation, telling us about visiting his father's birthplace in the Ukraine. He told stories he learned from his guide, Vakeya, from the local college town. He described when his father was born, on Oct. 12, 1905, under Russian rule, near Odessa, in the midst of the worst of riots or "Pogroms". He told of Jewish life in the Pale of Settlement under the Tsars, and the massacres and persecutions instigated by the government. He didn't hold back the details, as he portrayed the gruesome way the Jews were killed, including pregnant women, children and the elderly.

Even without reading the book before hand, we were able to follow Mr. Fleishman as he told story after story, beginning with the Jewish settlements in Palestine in the first century A.D. He told us accounts of how and why the Jews had to move several times, and how they struggled to begin making a new home, all over again in a new country. This was the best documented world history presentation I have ever attended. Mr. Fleishman gave each of us many reasons to be thankful for living in a free country, especially the week before celebrating Thanksgiving with family and friends.

Mr. Fleishman told us that upon returning to America after his visit to the Ukraine, he did research into his parents and grandparents past. He gave his family copies of this information, but he wanted to do more. He took 'writing' classes so he could fulfill his dream of writing a novel and share this wealth of knowledge and history.

And this is how "Goliath's Head" was born.

On both days of the presentation we had a "packed house". Professor Sandra Didner and Professor Susan Buchanan attended with their Contemporary Literature classes. The students were very attentive; no chatting, texting or whispering. When Mr. Fleishman's presentation was over, the students had many questions. One student asked how he could "go about" taking writing classes, as he thought about writing a book.

There were many students that stood in line to get his autograph for their book and also ask more questions. The students didn't want to leave. It was like they couldn't get enough information from him and they wanted more.

Professor Didner and Mr. Fleishman went to school together growing up, and it was fun listening to them tell stories and share fond memories.

Questionnaires were available to students for extra credit for their classes after viewing the exhibit. The exhibit had been traveling around South Florida since September, before they arrived at Palm Beach State. Also on exhibit were copies of signed documents from 1769.

They described four scared plants; sage, sweetgrass, tobacco and cedar smoke; as a physical reminder of the creator's omnipotent presence.

"It is the sacred way".

Dr. Gallon sent them a personal invitation to receive their award and to thank them for playing a critical role in accomplishing the Palm Beach State College mission. He also thanked them for their service and efforts in making our College a premier learning and teaching institution.

The College recognized 179 faculty and staff as 'Length of Service' recipients, with contributions ranging from five to 40 years totaling 1,905 years combined. Palm Beach State College recognizes the importance of the contributions of committed employees to the continuing success of the College.

Penny has 40 years of service and has worked on all three floors of the library and in every department. The Boca Campus Provost, Dr. Bernadette Russell, gave Penny a GRAND introduction, reviewing her 40 years of service during all the name changes from Palm Beach Jr. College, Palm Beach Community College and now Palm Beach State College. Penny is our 'unofficial' historian! If you have any questions about who worked when and where, or what a particular room or building was originally used for...she'll most likely know the answer. She is presently working on a project to get all our old yearbooks digitized. This is a huge project and we wish her well in this endeavor.

Nita has 25 years of service and has also worked in the library for all of these years. Nita was recognized as a nominee for the BRAVO award. This program helps the college applaud employees that get caught doing great things, going above and beyond the call of duty without hesitation. These behaviors embody the philosophy and mission of Palm Beach State College. Nita also received the yearly MAD award, [Make A Difference] in the Circulation Department. She always puts the students first and continues daily, working diligently to keep our General Collection of books in tip top shape. This is not an easy task with over 150,000 titles.

Doug has 15 years of service, and has also worked in the library for all of these years on all three floors.

Doug commented on some of his memories from the past:

"Seems like only yesterday and it was Oct. 1995! Started around the 19th or the 20th..." I have had offices on all three floors. Began with the Electronic Library Lab in room LL101 – where Word Processing Service Center are now located, except it was a large classroom with a satellite link to the outside world. I shared the classroom with Eric Neumann – our little corners were the “office space!” This was before databases on the Internet. Eric and I installed and maintained a network and CD-ROM stack (about 14 or more disks at once) on the network. These disks were the “databases” we access today over the Internet, but there were fewer databases at that time.

When Eric departed for greener pastures, I moved to the 2nd floor where Pat Alvarez’s office is now located. As long as the ELL remained on the first floor, I was on the 2nd floor. Keep in mind, Reference was on the 3rd floor in those days.

Then, we re-named the lab to the Internet Lab and moved it to room LL303, the current location of the “lab/classroom” area. My office was stuffed in the back of that room for awhile, but then I moved to the office where Rob is now located on the 3rd floor. When “Rosemarie” retired, I moved into her office – my current office.

Events or memories? Oh, I remember when;

… the first six months I worked here, I was living in the college apartments on 2nd Street and commuting back and forth on weekends to my family in St. Petersburg. The house in St. Pete finally sold and we purchased a home in Royal Palm Beach.

…preparing blueberry pancakes for everyone for our “holiday” breakfast one year.

…a student in a wheelchair stuck on the third floor one afternoon when the power went out. We called EMT and those guys strapped the student into a chair and carried her down to the first floor. The wheelchair went separately!

… doing a staff “training” over the summer and teaching Genealogy. I remember the workshops I did (through Continuing Education) on Genealogy and other “new” Internet sources (new at the time, second-nature today).

… the team teaching with Lori Crane, David Duncan, and Lois Pasapane. Then, the trips we took to Biloxi, MS, and Tallahassee, FL, to present a paper about our experiences.

… being one of the first to teach using WebCT (which is now Blackboard). And the 1-credit courses – LIS1002 and LIS2004.

…the hurricanes and the damage to the circulating books. That was about 10 years after I began. In the first week (Oct. 1995), sections of Military Trail were so flooded, it was difficult heading west!

… interrupting “couples” (at the lips), students in the study rooms (blush!)… in romantic relationships.

We are very proud of our colleagues and wish them many more wonderful and enjoyable years of service.

His wonderful presentation today was on European Jewish history. Mr. Fleishman also discussed his book which is the story of a young Jewish boy who grows up during the 1880s, and as an adult, has to make some very difficult choices. This last session Tuesday at 12:30 pm, will last approximately 90 minutes.

Room was packed by students, faculty and staff.

Business Speakers Series-Joe Tedesco-Guest Speaker

Joe Tedesco, Mindset Manager Consultant, was our 1st guest speaker in the Business Speakers Series for the BAS program, on Tuesday Oct. 19th.

Joe's talk was on "A Mindset of Successful Business, How to Mind Your Business." He covered the top 5 foundational thoughts of successful people, and the top 5 behaviors of successful people. He recommended reading James Allen's 1903, "As a Man Thinketh".

He is a self-guided individual and began working for himself as a teen. At age 35 he sold everything and didn't need to work anymore. He wondered why everyone else was not as successful at this stage in their life. He has a passion for helping others to achieve their goals.

Joe was very interactive with students during his presentation and challenged students to think for themselves. I liked his #1 Law of Responsiblity; "Our thoughts and how we think are our own, and no one elses." Joe gave many 'real life' examples in his presentation for students to relate to.

Joe's quote of the day? "Get passionate about your business; your business wants you as much as you want it." This one-hour presentation was a condensed version he usually uses in private sessions with business owners, top salesmen, and business executives, all the way to top performing athletes in golf, softball, and tennis.

Thank you to Diana Loreman, BAS Reference Librarian, for arranging this worthwhile event for our students, faculty and staff.

Nicole Shouse's three senior classes from Park Vista High School in Boynton Beach, traveled for a full day of tours and library instruction. The Palm Beach State College Reference Librarian and instructor for the day was Professor Doug Cornwell.

Ms. Shouse's students attend the college class on their high school campus but take the mandatory library instruction on our campus for Strategies SLS1501. We certainly enjoyed their visit and hope to see them again in the near future.

Going Green with Calculators

This term we are replacing regular batteries with rechargeable for our semester calculators. When students need new batteries, they can bring the calculator and the "dead" batteries to the 3rd floor of the library at the Lake Worth campus. We will exchange these for "recharged" batteries. If you have any questions, you can call the Circulation desk at 561-868-3710.

The Palm Beach State Library!

Three students and a cow used one of our study rooms for 2 hours to prepare for a group project in their marketing class on Monday. What excitement in the air as we waited for the "cow" to appear from the study room with 3 students in tow. We could smell the "fresh" fried chicken treats for classmates as they left. Just goes to show us the library has more to offer than we ever imagined for patrons and staff.

Who said libraries were dull?
